Fidelity Launches New Stock Research Capabilities To Help Investors Make Better Informed Decisions

First Major Brokerage to Provide Analysis and Rankings of Equity Research Firms, and Online Portfolio-Level Backtesting

BOSTON, January 14, 2009 - Fidelity Investments today announced the launch of three innovative capabilities to its stock research platform to help investors generate ideas and make more informed investment decisions. All of the new offerings are available to customers at no cost, and strengthen Fidelity's already award-winning1 research platform, which offers more independent research than any other major online broker2.

"In any market environment our first priority is to provide customers the research tools and resources they need to succeed, and this becomes even more important during volatile markets like the ones we're experiencing currently," said James C. Burton, president of Fidelity's retail brokerage business. "Our latest initiatives are designed to help the hundreds of thousands of investors who visit Fidelity's stock research pages each week to make better informed decisions. This is all part of our long-running commitment to provide our customers outstanding research."

Fidelity's new offerings available on Fidelity.com include:
Explore and Rank Research Firms: Investors can now learn more about the methodologies, approaches and equity styles of 19 well-known equity research providers whose content is available at no cost, on Fidelity.com, and view scorecards that rank 10 independent analyst firms on multiple dimensions of performance based on their past buy/sell recommendations.
Portfolio-Level Backtesting: One year after being the first major brokerage firm to introduce free online backtesting, Fidelity has expanded its offering to allow Fidelity customers to do full portfolio-level backtesting of strategies on the equities listed on the Dow Jones Industrial Average Index (.DJI), the NASDAQ-100 Index (.NDX), or the S&P 100 Index (.OEX).
Markets & Sectors: Fidelity has redesigned and greatly enhanced its Markets & Sectors research. The new Overview home page provides extensive information at a glance, while providing easy access to a wealth of content. Information has been organized to provide updates on the Equity, Interest Rates, Foreign Exchanges, and Energy, Metals & Agriculture markets. In addition, there are now top headlines and research reports covering U.S. and World Indexes, extensive sector news, analysis and research, as well as news, research and Fidelity commentary on the economy.

Explore Research Firms

With the industry's broadest number of research reports available online, Fidelity is helping investors prioritize this expansive content and find the reports most relevant to them through its Explore Research Firms page on Fidelity.com. Here investors can answer three multiple-choice questions to determine their preferred investing style and then find the firms that most closely align with that style. Investors can also sort the full list of 19 firms by Methodology, Approach, Equity Style or Report Types. "Help" buttons are available throughout the page that define the categories, and present the pros and cons of the options.

Fidelity has also enhanced the search functionality for analyst reports enabling investors to easily search for specific equity mentions in any research report on Fidelity.com. Users can also search for reports by inputting the name of a research firm, the date the report was issued or the type of report.

View Research Firm Rankings

In an industry first, Fidelity is providing investors with a Research Firm Scorecard, which analyzes the performance of 10 independent analyst firms, whose reports are available on Fidelity.com. Investors now have an insider's look at the hypothetical returns that would have been generated from the firms' buy recommendations. As well, data is available on how these research firms performed against other Fidelity independent research providers across 10 market sectors: Oil & Gas, Basic Materials, Industrials, Consumer Goods, Healthcare, Consumer Services, Telecommunications, Utilities, Financials, and Technology.

Review Multiple Trade Ideas with Portfolio-Level Backtesting

Building on its leading backtesting technology, Fidelity has introduced the ability for customers to run backtesting strategies on multiple equities simultaneously, across stocks in three major indices -- Dow Jones Industrial Average Index, the NASDAQ-100 Index, or the S&P 100 Index. Using one of the eight pre-built trading strategies on Fidelity.com, investors can discover how multiple stocks would have performed under prior market conditions, and use the hypothetical returns to inform their trading ideas.

Stay Current on U.S. and World Markets

The redesigned Markets & Sectors Overview home page aims to give investors visual snapshots of information they can easily evaluate to get a big picture view of the current state of U.S. and World markets and industry sectors. Investors can also easily access news stories, research or financial tables relevant to each market.

Also available on the Markets & Sectors Overview home page are Fidelity commentary and timely analyses on developments in the financial markets provided by the Market Analysis, Research and Education (MARE) group, a unit of Fidelity Management & Research Co. (FMRCo).

"We believe that as investors experiment with these research tools, they'll have opportunities to uncover investment and trading ideas in new markets, sectors and stocks that they hadn't considered before," said Burton.

Performance of buy/sell recommendations is only one aspect of the research offered on Fidelity.com. Although it is useful to understand a research firm's overall track record, a research firm's performance on any given stock can diverge significantly from the overall performance. There are additional factors beyond performance that any investor should consider in evaluating a research provider, such as the insights provided and the ease with which the research can be used. Performance of recommendations, while important, should not be the only factor an investor considers in evaluating research.

The Research Firm Scorecard is provided for informational purposes only, and does not constitute advice or guidance, nor is it an endorsement or recommendation for any particular research provider. The Research Firm Scorecard is provided by Integrity Research Associates, LLC, an independent company not affiliated with Fidelity Investments.

The Trading Strategies and Backtesting feature and trade signals generated by the strategies are provided for educational purposes and as example only, and they should not be used or relied upon to make decisions about your individual situation. You may modify the backtesting parameters as you see fit. Fidelity is not adopting, making a recommendation for or endorsing any trading or investment strategy or particular security. The Backtesting feature provides a hypothetical calculation of how a security or portfolio or portfolio of securities, subject to an example trading strategy, would have performed over a historical time period. Only securities that were in existence during the historical time period and that have historical pricing data are available for use in the Backtesting feature. The feature has only a limited ability to calculate hypothetical trading commissions, and it does not account for any other fees or for tax consequences that could result from a trading strategy. You should not assume that Backtesting of a trading strategy will provide any indication of how your portfolio of securities, or a new portfolio of securities, might perform over time. You should choose your own trading strategies based on your particular objectives and risk tolerances. Be sure to review your decisions periodically to make sure they are still consistent with your goals.

Past performance is not a guarantee of future results. Current and future portfolio holdings are subject to risk.
