Fidelity Charitable Gift Fund Reports Record Giving Year

BOSTON, February 1, 2007 -- The Fidelity® Charitable Gift FundSM today announced the largest grant-making year in its history, as overall grants to charity surpassed $950 million in 2006, up 13 percent from 2005. Since its inception in 1991, the Gift Fund has granted more than $6.5 billion to over 103,000 nonprofit organizations nationwide, as of December 31, 2006.

The Gift Fund, which is one of the nation's largest public charities and has the largest donor-advised fund program in the United States1, also attracted record contributions of nearly $1.3 billion in 2006, up approximately 23 percent year-over-year. Donations of securities accounted for more than 66 percent of all contributions to the Gift Fund in 2006.

"By virtually every measure, 2006 was a tremendous year for the Gift Fund, driven by strong gains in the stock market, a solid economy and several program enhancements which helped attract new donors," said David L. Giunta, president of the Fidelity Charitable Gift Fund. "Setting records in grants and contributions reflects the continued generosity of our donors and further demonstrates how donor-advised funds continue to bring more individuals and corporations to philanthropy by making giving simpler and more effective."

Lower Fees and Initial Contribution Minimum Helps Fuel Record Year

Helping to fuel its record setting growth, which included over 4,700 new Giving Accounts, up 79 percent year-over-year, the Gift Fund introduced several enhancements to its program, including the reduction of its Giving Account minimum from $10,000 to $5,000. The Gift Fund's lower minimum is helping to attract younger donors, as the average age of an individual who established a new Giving Account in the $5,000 to $10,000 range was 53, compared to nearly 63 years of age for the Gift Fund's overall base of donors.

Other enhancements introduced by the Gift Fund in 2006 included the reduction of the administrative fee on most individual Giving Accounts by at least 40 percent and the lowering of the grant recommendation minimum from $250 to $100.

"Donor-advised funds are part of a fundamental shift in philanthropy toward more strategic and thoughtful giving by a broad spectrum of donors -- a shift that we believe will continue to result in more dollars flowing to charity," said Giunta. "We will continue to look for ways to strengthen our program to advance philanthropy by making it easier for more individuals to develop an effective gifting strategy that complements their overall financial plan."
