Life Cycle Funds

Fact Sheet

OVERVIEW

Life cycle funds invest in a variety of asset classes - such as stocks, bonds and cash - and are regularly rebalanced to increase investors' chances of meeting long-term investing goals. Life cycle funds are growing in popularity with employers sponsoring workplace retirement savings plans, employees participating in these plans and individual investors.

WHO THEY ARE FOR

Life cycle funds may be ideal for workers who struggle with asset allocation and have neither the time nor the inclination to actively manage their workplace retirement savings accounts. The funds may also be suitable for do-it-yourself investors managing personal investments earmarked for retirement, as well as for those working with advisors who want a single diversified fund that is managed based on a specific timeframe.

HOW THEY WORK

Life cycle funds combine active management, constant monitoring and sophisticated rebalancing to create a predetermined asset allocation strategy that becomes more conservative as the fund's retirement date approaches. Because life cycle funds handle the key elements of portfolio management, including regular rebalancing and systematic review of holdings, they enable investors to delegate responsibility for managing their long-term assets. These funds are subject to the volatility of financial markets in the U.S. and abroad and may be subject to the additional risks associated with investing in high-yield, small cap and foreign securities.
